Moving to the Upper West Side? Your Door Security Checklist
New apartment on the Upper West Side? Run through this door-security checklist before you unpack — rekeying, deadbolts, and more.

Day one in a new apartment, before the boxes: rekey every lock. You have no idea how many copies of the old keys exist — previous tenants, their roommates, brokers, contractors, the super's predecessor. Rekeying invalidates all of them in under an hour, and we can key everything alike so one key opens the whole apartment.
Next, audit the hardware. Is there a proper deadbolt with at least a one-inch throw? Does it align with the strike, or do you have to shove the door? Is the strike secured with long screws into the frame? In pre-war buildings, check the mortise lock too — originals are excellent when serviced, tired when neglected.
Finally, plan your key strategy: spares with a trusted neighbor (not under the mat), a copy for the super if your building requires it, and your locksmith's number in your phone. Call Upper West Side Locksmith & Keys at (646) 469-7112 for same-day move-in rekeying anywhere in the neighborhood.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first security step in a new apartment?
Rekey every lock. It is fast, affordable, and invalidates every key the previous occupants ever handed out.
Should I upgrade the deadbolt too?
If it is a light-duty lock or misaligned, yes — move-in is the cheapest moment to upgrade.
Do I need to give my super a key?
Many buildings require it, and co-op rules often do. Rekey first, then provide the required copy.
Can you rekey on moving day?
Yes — same-day move-in rekeying is one of our most common calls. Book (646) 469-7112 ahead if you can.
