Upper West Side Locksmith & Keys
Master Key Systems — Upper West Side Locksmith
Master key systems for Upper West Side buildings — designed keying hierarchies for staff and tenants. Call (646) 469-7112.
A 40-unit pre-war co-op on Riverside Drive, a brownstone converted to offices near Columbus Circle, a medical practice with five exam rooms — they all share one problem: too many keys in too many hands. Upper West Side Locksmith & Keys designs master key systems where one hierarchy of keys opens exactly what each person should open, and nothing more.
We survey the building, draw up the keying schedule — grand master, masters, and change keys — then pin, cut, and document every cylinder. Staff carry one key instead of twenty, supers and managers keep true master access, and tenants' keys stay limited to their own doors.
What is included
Designed keying schedules
Every door mapped, every key's access defined on paper before we cut anything.
Restricted keyways
System keys cannot be duplicated without authorization — the system stays closed.
Grand master control
Building owners and managers hold top-level access; everyone else is limited by design.
Documented & expandable
Key records and pinning charts let the system grow with new doors and new tenants.
Rekeying & maintenance
We service the systems we build — rekeying for turnover, new cylinders for renovations.

Frequently asked questions
How does a master key system work?
Cylinders are pinned so each door opens with its own key plus any higher-level master keys. Tenants open only their doors; the super's master opens the whole building.
Can the system grow as our building changes?
Yes. We design with expansion in mind and keep the keying records, so new doors and new staff fold in cleanly.
What happens when an employee leaves?
Rekey the affected doors — their key stops working everywhere. With restricted keyways, you know they could not have made copies.
Is this only for large buildings?
Not at all. Small offices, medical practices, and brownstone conversions with five doors benefit just as much as 100-unit co-ops.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the door count. A survey and proposal come first — call (646) 469-7112 to start.
