Upgrading Your Building's Intercom: Options for Co-ops and Condos

Crackling 1980s intercom? A guide to audio, video, and phone-based intercom upgrades for UWS co-ops and condos.

Upgrading Your Building's Intercom: Options for Co-ops and Condos

The intercom in many Upper West Side vestibules predates the tenants — buzzing static, dead handsets, a door station held together by hope. Upgrading is one of the highest-value improvements a building can make: every resident uses it daily, and modern systems end the missed-delivery era.

The three paths: refurbish the existing audio system (cheapest, keeps the wiring), install video intercoms (see who is buzzing), or go phone-based (visitors ring your cell; answer and buzz in from anywhere). Phone-based systems are the most popular upgrade we install — no new handsets in apartments, and they work over the building's existing wiring in most cases.

For boards, the process is a wiring survey, a proposal with phasing so the building is never without entry, and installation floor by floor. We coordinate with managing agents throughout. Individual apartments with dead handsets can usually be fixed without a building-wide project — call (646) 469-7112 for a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Can we keep our existing wiring?

Often yes — we survey what is in the walls before recommending a system.

What is a phone-based intercom?

Visitors buzz from the front panel and it rings residents' cell phones. Answer and unlock from anywhere.

How disruptive is a building-wide upgrade?

We phase the work floor by floor so entry always works. Most buildings are done in days, not weeks.

Can you just fix my apartment's handset?

Usually yes — dead stations are a common standalone repair.
